An antique Japanese Meiji period enameled bronze cachepot, hexagonal in form and rich with color. Turquoise, rose and blush enamel scatters cherry blossoms across each side, framing relief cartouches of birds among reeds and foliage. Handles and feet are cast as knotted branches, a naturalistic touch that gives the beautifully accented oriental shape its sculptural grace. Elegant enamel work, beautifully finished on all sides.
The Meiji period, beginning in 1868, opened Japan to the West. Its metalworkers turned centuries of skill toward decorative objects shown at the great international exhibitions in Vienna, Philadelphia and Paris. European collectors embraced them with enthusiasm, and Japanese bronze and enamel became central to the Japonisme that shaped Western taste in the late 19th century.
An elegant accent pot for ivy or orchid plants. A great accent or centerpiece on a dining table, console or coffee table, where the warm bronze patina and soft enamel colors bring a collected look to traditional and contemporary interiors alike.
Circa mid-1800s
