Pair Antique French Louis XVI Bronze Wall Sconces are an exquisite example of the metalsmith's art! Cast in solid bronze, each has achieved a lovely patina over the decades. The detail is astounding, with ribbons, foliates, tassels, and most prominent~ the Staff of Hermes, or as the Romans called him, Mercury. The cadeusus is the symbol of the fluted scepter intertwined with serpents, adopted by the medical community in the United States pretty much by accidental interpretation! Each sconce is mounted with two scrolled, embellished arms and candle holders. One must examine this lovely pair closely to fully appreciate their amazing artistry!
