This exceptional Dutch Louis XVI period linen press is a rare and beautifully preserved example of late 18th century neoclassical cabinetmaking. A strongly molded cornice crowns the cabinet above a finely carved frieze arranged with classical swags, rosettes, geometric borders, and restrained architectural detailing. The two substantial paneled doors are framed by multiple tiers of molding, giving the facade remarkable depth and dimension. Fluted vertical elements, carved corner blocks, and repeated geometric motifs continue throughout the composition, unifying the upper cabinet with the three generously proportioned drawers below. Brass ring pulls provide an elegant finishing detail against the softly toned oak.
Originally created to store a household’s finest linens, embroidered textiles, and treasured garments, the upper cabinet offers generous enclosed storage behind its paneled doors. In today’s interior, this spacious compartment could also be thoughtfully adapted as an entertainment center, allowing a television to be discreetly concealed when not in use.
