This remarkable 19th century Dutch collector’s cabinet combines richly patinated wood with an extraordinary collection of original brass hardware. The beautifully aged surface has developed tremendous depth and character, while the pierced brass hinges, elaborate central lock plate, corner mounts, drawer fittings, and carrying handles on the sides give the cabinet its unmistakable distinction.
Dutch furniture of the 18th and 19th centuries occasionally reflected decorative ideas encountered through maritime trade and travel to Asia and the East, yet here that influence remains a subtle part of a distinctly Dutch cabinetmaking tradition.
The pair of doors opens fully for easy access to a fitted interior arranged with a shelf and multiple small drawers, suggesting its original use as a collector’s cabinet for treasured objects, documents, or personal possessions. An additional full width drawer is incorporated beneath the cabinet. The upper case rests upon four boldly turned barley twist supports joined by an intricate stretcher and raised upon bun feet.
Exceptionally versatile for today’s interiors, it could serve as a collector’s cabinet, bar cabinet, linen cabinet, or refined storage piece in a library, living room, or bedroom. The survival of its original hardware, including the impressive side handles, is particularly noteworthy and completes the cabinet’s authentic historic presence.
