A French Louis XVI mahogany cabinet crowned with Carrara marble and a pierced brass gallery, glowing with the deep, warm patina of richly figured mahogany. Slender brass moldings frame the single drawer and the two paneled doors, catching the light against the reddish tones of the wood, while laurel wreath ring pulls and ribbon bow escutcheons bring a graceful neoclassical note.
Fluted corner posts rise above turned and fluted tapered legs finished in brass sabots, lending a light and elegant stance. The doors are built in classic frame and panel construction and secured by a brass rod lock, a refined detail of fine French cabinetmaking.
The Louis XVI style, with its neoclassical clarity of line and delicacy of ornament, remained a treasured language for French cabinetmakers well into the 20th century. Mahogany paired with brass gallery and moldings is a hallmark of the Parisian interpretation of the style, prized for its tailored sophistication.
Graceful in scale, the cabinet is lovely as a nightstand in a primary bedroom, as an end table beside a sofa or reading chair in a library or study, or in an entry or powder room where the marble and brass can shine. A pair of ivory lamps or a single orchid on the marble top completes the look in traditional and transitional interiors alike.
Circa mid 1900s.
