SaleA remarkable example of 19th-century Country French craftsmanship, this raised cabinet was created from solid old-growth oak using traditional pegged mortise-and-tenon joinery. Its form reflects a centuries-old tradition of specialized storage furniture designed to keep valuable household possessions secure while positioning the cabinet at a convenient height.
The upper cabinet features deeply molded, shaped door panels framed by forged iron hinges, lockworks, and decorative key guards. Inside, notched wooden supports allow the removable shelf to be adjusted to different heights. The back retains traditional chamfered plank construction, further illustrating the cabinetmaker’s time-honored methods.
Below, an impressive open pediment is composed of turned columns, shaped arches, carved rosettes, and a central molded support. The architectural arrangement gives the cabinet a commanding presence while retaining the warmth and character associated with French provincial furniture.
The interior opening measures 25 inches high by 47 inches wide. With the shelf removed, the cabinet can accommodate a flat-screen television, transforming this historic antique into an exceptional entertainment center without sacrificing its original character.
Painstakingly stripped by our expert in-house staff using a proprietary process, the cabinet retains the natural patina, texture, and beauty of the centuries-old oak.
