This 19th century French center table is a finely executed interpretation of the Régence style, distinguished by its sculptural carved base, serpentine contours and softly aged painted finish. The shaped top follows the movement of the apron below, where carved scrollwork and a central foliate cartouche introduce the fluid ornament associated with the Régence tradition.
Bold cabriole legs are enriched with deeply carved acanthus leaves and scrolling details, continuing downward to an elaborate shaped stretcher. At its center, a pierced carved cartouche creates an especially decorative focal point, while the sweeping stretcher elements unite the four legs into a beautifully composed base. The muted gray painted finish has developed a pleasing patina that settles naturally into the carving and emphasizes its depth and detail.
Generous in width yet relatively shallow in depth, this antique table offers considerable versatility. Its 24 inch knee clearance makes it particularly suitable as a center table or writing table, while its decorative form also lends itself beautifully to a library, salon, living room or grand entry.
