Exceptional 19th century Country French Régence Liégeois china buffet, hand carved from solid oak and distinguished by an abundance of elegant carving that gives this grand cabinet a remarkably light and airy appearance. The upper display is an extraordinary achievement of Liégeois cabinetmaking, with glazed doors framed and overlaid with delicate carved oak ornamentation. Pierced carving, baskets of flowers, acanthus leaves and scrolling Régence motifs rise through the façade and culminate in the magnificent pierced and carved bonnet.
The central glazed cabinet is particularly accomplished, with its curved door following the projecting form of the case and creating an unusually sophisticated architectural element. Carved framework continues directly across the glass, an impressive feat of cabinetmaking that allows the carving to remain the principal decorative element without diminishing the openness of the display. Flanking glazed doors, canted corners, carved pilasters and rounded returns complete the upper case, providing extensive display while maintaining an elegant sense of lightness.
The buffet below is equally successful in its marriage of form and function. Three beautifully carved drawers include a fitted silverware drawer, while the lower cabinets open to generous interior shelving. Carved and molded door panels, fine decorative hardware, canted corners and a shaped carved apron carry the Régence design throughout the lower case and provide an exceptional amount of practical storage.
