Sale19th Century French Louis XVI China Buffet in Solid Oak represents the refined neoclassical architecture that remained so beloved in France during the late 19th century. Hand-crafted from solid oak, it features a stately arbalète, or archer’s bow, crown centered with a beautifully sculpted floral wreath, flanked by floral sprays, rosettes and carved foliate detail that give the entire upper section a graceful sense of movement.
The upper cabinet was designed for display, with beveled glass panes on each side allowing one to showcase fine china, crystal, porcelains or treasured collections. At the center, a raised panel door is carved in relief with a basket of flowers, one of the most enduring motifs of the Louis XVI tradition, symbolizing abundance, refinement and the beauty of the home. The architecture is further enhanced by tapered, fluted and carved columns, repeated in varying proportions from the crown to the lower cabinet, creating a cohesive and balanced design.
The open serving area below the upper cabinet includes a beveled mirror backsplash, adding reflected light while making the buffet especially practical for serving. The lower section provides abundant storage with drawers fitted with solid cast brass bale pulls, above spacious cabinet doors framed with carved rosettes, fluting, shell motifs and Greek wave detail inspired by the classical vocabulary of ancient Greece and Rome.
A wonderful choice for a dining room, breakfast room or large entertaining space, this antique French buffet combines display, storage and serving function with the timeless presence of Louis XVI design.
