Dating to the early 1900s, this exceptional Liégeois Régence style clock buffet cabinet is crafted in solid oak and displays the exuberant carving for which the cabinetmakers of Liège were renowned. Its sweeping cornice rises toward a pierced shell and foliate crest, framing the original clock with its beautiful brass face and individual white enamel Roman numerals. The original clock is an exceptional feature in its own right. Set behind an arched glazed door, its pewter face is encircled by individually mounted white enamel Roman numeral cartouches and enriched with applied brass filigree depicting scrolling foliage, floral sprays and a classical sun mask. Complete with its original pendulum, the clock is beautifully integrated into the carved architecture of the cabinet.
Please note: The clock is complete, but antique clock movements are not guaranteed to operate or keep precise time.
The glazed upper doors are ornamented with extraordinarily pierced carvings that appear almost like lace against the glass. Sculpted shells, curling acanthus leaves and pendant floral motifs fill the upper corners, while carved baskets of flowers embellish the base of each door. The carving continues along the pilasters, molded surrounds and architectural divisions of the facade, giving the entire cabinet remarkable depth and movement.
Solid raised panels enrich the central and lower doors, each adorned with sculpted shells, foliage and jewel-like floral ornament. The four central drawers are carved from solid pieces of oak and shaped in pronounced en arbalète contours. Deeply carved floral reserves frame each drawer, complemented by the original brass pulls and hardware.
Behind the glazed doors, open shelves provide generous display space. The upper central compartment and spacious lower cupboards offer excellent enclosed storage. The warmth of the oak, its beautifully aged patina and the extraordinary quality of the carving make this an exquisite example of Liégeois furniture from the early 1900s.
