Exceptional 18th century Country French Normandy armoire hand crafted from solid oak, distinguished by unusually elaborate carving and fine cabinetmaking. The double doors feature deeply molded and shaped raised panels with delicate floral details, surrounded by an extraordinary hand carved foliate border with an almost embroidery like quality.
The attention to construction continues along the sides, each designed with five individual raised panels, an exceptional detail for a Country French armoire of this scale. Rather than treating the sides as secondary surfaces, the cabinetmaker carried the architectural character around the entire case, suggesting a custom commission of particular quality.
Beautifully forged iron hinges and decorative escutcheons complement the richly aged oak. Below, geometric carving and a central medallion lead to the shaped apron and scrolling feet, with carved banding continuing the decorative rhythm of the façade.
The double doors open to reveal a generous interior with beautifully aged timber, a shelf and two interior drawers. At just 21 inches deep, the armoire offers excellent storage without requiring the depth often associated with antique armoires of this width.
Normandy has long been celebrated for its regional oak furniture, and this armoire beautifully represents that tradition with a level of craftsmanship well beyond the ordinary rustic example. Its rich patina, sophisticated construction and exceptional decorative detail give it the enduring character sought in authentic 18th century Country French furniture.
