18th Century Rustic Dutch Colonial Armoire ~ Cabinet is a charming relic from a bygone era, when rural artisans created simple but functional furnishings for their homes from the locally available materials.  In this case, old-growth oak was employed to make the sturdy casework, with thick planks employed for all sides and even the shelves within.  In traditional Dutch fashion, the casework was rested upon two wooden skids which served as very sturdy leg supports.  A tailored crown molding added a little style flair at the top, and the local blacksmith used his considerable talents to hand-forge fanciful wrought iron hinges and lockwork to complete the work.  Handles on the sides made it easier to move the piece around for cleaning and relocation to a different room in the home.  Such pieces were and remain very versatile, serving for folded clothing in the bedroom, linens in the dining room, or china in the kitchen!
