Exceptional 18th century Country French buffet, entirely hand crafted from solid oak and stripped to reveal the natural grain and beautifully aged patina of the wood. Its Neoclassical influence is expressed through balanced proportions, strong linear form and restrained classical ornament, giving this grand buffet a stately yet remarkably clean presence.
The quality of the period cabinetmaking is evident throughout. Constructed entirely with hand tools, the buffet features a hand hewn back, traditional mortise and tenon joinery and fully pegged construction. Particularly distinctive are the mitered corners embellished with hand carved acanthus leaves, bringing classical refinement to the strength of the solid oak case. Deeply molded raised panels, a broad molded top and original brass hardware complete the beautifully composed façade.
The original interior is divided into three spacious compartments, each fitted with substantial oak shelving, with three drawers above providing additional storage. This generous interior reflects the traditional purpose of the Country French buffet while retaining the integrity of its original 18th century construction.
The stripped finish brings the structural beauty, carving and craftsmanship of the oak to the forefront. Its pale natural surface and restrained classical lines allow the buffet to work equally well in a traditional setting or alongside modern art and sculpture, where the simplicity of its form and authenticity of its 18th century craftsmanship have particular impact.
