Rustic 19th Century French Louis Philippe Oak Buffet was hand-crafted from solid planks of old-growth oak by rural artisans primarily concerned with producing a storage and serving piece that would last for generations, rather than creating a style statement.  The no-nonsense approach includes solid planks for the top surface which is amazingly shallow for such a piece, making this a great choice for cozy rooms, hallways, or anywhere the traffic pattern is of importance.  Solid planks were also used for all the sides, even including the rough-hewn back panels.  A modicum of carved embellishment in the form of a wheat border was applied to the drawer facades, while the cabinet doors have no carved detail.  The old brass hinges survived, but the drawer pulls and cabinet key guard were replaced about a century ago.  The stripped finish reveals the sheer natural beauty and patina of the seasoned wood.  Note the pegged mortise & tenon joinery used throughout the design, indicative of time-honored techniques that ensure centuries of enjoyment!
