An elegant expression of Country French cabinetmaking, this antique solid oak commode draws its sculptural lines from the Louis XV tradition. The distinctive en arbalète façade gives the front a flowing double curvature, with a defined central projection carried through all three drawers. Above, the molded oak top follows the same contour, creating a harmonious silhouette that continues through the shaped apron and carved feet.
Exceptional original brass hardware is a defining feature of the commode. Ornate foliate backplates support articulated bail handles, their scrolling leaves extending across the drawer fronts with the exuberance of rococo ornament. Coordinating pierced keyhole escutcheons enrich the center of each drawer, completing a balanced decorative arrangement. The richly worked brass complements the deep patina of the solid oak, lending a particular warmth and refinement to this provincial piece.
Molded drawer fronts, recessed side panels, and carefully outlined corner stiles demonstrate the attention given to the cabinet’s construction and finish. The serpentine apron is traced by a continuous molded border, rising over short cabriole legs that terminate in carved volute feet. These fluid details bring the romance of Louis XV design to a practical chest of generous drawers, with the lasting appeal of solid oak and fine original brasswork.
Circa early 1900s.
