A French Louis XIV commode in stripped oak, with a serpentine facade carved in shell, floral and foliate motifs that flow across all four drawers. The pale natural finish brings out the grain of the old oak and gives every carved detail a soft, luminous depth, while cast brass pulls repeat the graceful curves of the ornament.
A shaped top with tiered molding crowns the facade, mirrored by matching molding at the base. Rounded corner posts curve back in serpentine form and carry their own stylized shell and foliate carving, and bold bun feet give the commode a sturdy, sculptural stance. Built of oak, the commode was painstakingly stripped by our expert in-house staff using our proprietary process, which preserves the patina and natural beauty of the old wood.
The Louis XIV style carries the grandeur of the Grand Siècle, with bold sculptural forms and symmetrical ornament. French cabinetmakers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries revived and reinterpreted the style, celebrating the refined legacy of French furniture making.
Lovely in an entry beneath a gilt mirror, in a bedroom, or in a living room, the light oak finish suits airy interiors and pairs beautifully with linen upholstery, contemporary art and other European antiques.
