A Country French Régence style chest of drawers crafted in oak, with three serpentine drawers raised on graceful cabriole legs. Each drawer front is carved as three molded panels, a central field of lattice flanked by panels finished with stylized foliate cartouches, and fitted with rocaille pulls. A shaped top with a molded edge crowns the case. Below, the scalloped apron centers a carved shell and sweeps into leaf carved knees, and the legs finish in carved hoof feet. The figured grain of the oak glows across the top and drawer fronts.
The Régence took its name from the regency of Philippe d'Orléans, who governed France from the death of Louis XIV in 1715 until the young Louis XV came of age in 1723. Those years marked a great rise in French furniture making, introducing the supple curves, carved shells, and lattice motifs that would flower into the Rococo. The 19th century brought a revival of all French styles, reviving and reinterpreting the Régence in celebration of the refined legacy of French furniture making.
Suited to a bedroom, an entry, or a living room beneath a favorite painting or mirror, the chest brings warmth, character, and practical storage to traditional and transitional interiors alike.
