An exceptional Louis XV period buffet from the Liège region of French speaking Belgium, richly carved in solid oak and retaining its original hardware. The flowing contours and finely worked ornament give this antique the elegance associated with French influenced furniture of the region, while the oak’s deep patina lends warmth and depth to every carved detail.
Three central drawers follow a serpentine profile, their fronts embellished with scrolling foliage and shaped reserves surrounding ornate brass bail pulls. Flanking cupboard doors feature sinuous molded panels enriched with shell motifs, floral pendants, and leafy flourishes. The carving continues across the undulating apron, where delicate scrolls echo the movement of the façade. Short cabriole legs terminate in scrolled feet, completing the composition with the fluidity characteristic of Louis XV design. Above, the molded oak top follows the gentle projection of the central drawers.
Fully pegged construction and chamfered back panels reveal the traditional cabinetmaking behind its decorative refinement. Original brass hinges, escutcheons, and drawer pulls complement the mellow oak, preserving an especially desirable element of its historic character. Shelved cupboards and three drawers provide generous enclosed storage, making this beautifully preserved form as useful today as it was in the home for which it was commissioned.
18th century.
