18th Century French Louis XVI Period End Table was completely crafted by hand by able rural cabinetmakers from local indigenous white oak, which was allowed to fully mature in the forest, then was seasoned for years and finally made into furniture, which explains its extraordinary condition even after two centuries of use!  The entire piece was assembled with pegged mortise & tenon joinery, double pegged in the joints holding the aprons to the legs.  The molding around the top which features projections on the corners, was cut right into the top planks, instead of an applied molding such as that used by the more sophisticated big-city makers, and adopted as standard procedure in the 19th century.  The same treatment was accorded the aprons.  The legs were turned and tapered, then fluted by hand, with flares just above the foot tips.  What a testament to the talented artisans of a bygone era!
