An 18th century Dutch country tilt top table in stripped oak, with a broad round top of wide planks resting on a sturdy tripod base. The stripped finish reveals the soft, pale grain of the wood, worn smooth by generations of use and now aglow with a natural bleached patina.
Beneath the top, a pair of shaped cleats pivots on turned pegs set into a solid oak block, and a hand forged iron strap latch secures the top in place for use. Released, the top swings upright so the table can stand flat against a wall, a clever solution for the modest rooms of rural households. The splayed legs are joined by a triangular stretcher, and the whole is assembled with pegged mortise and tenon joinery, the work of a village joiner building for strength and daily service.
In 18th century Holland, tilt top tables were found in farmhouses and country inns, where floor space was precious and a single table served for meals, chores, and evenings by the hearth. Their plain, practical forms reflect the Dutch regard for sober craftsmanship and well made household furniture.
Today, the pale stripped oak suits a relaxed country house, a coastal retreat, or a minimalist modern interior with equal ease. Use it as a center table in a sitting room or entry, pair it with a deep sofa for books and flowers, or tip the top upright and let the sculptural silhouette stand as a piece of folk art.
