As beautiful as it is unusual, this 19th century French Louis XVI style cylinder cabinet was crafted from fruitwood and lavishly adorned with hand carved Neoclassical decoration. The warm, mellow color and rich patina acquired over more than a century bring wonderful depth to the carving and give the cabinet the unmistakable character of fine antique French furniture.
The curved cylinder front is beautifully carved with a classical urn surrounded by scrolling acanthus, flowers and foliage. Swagged garlands embellish the sides, with laurel leaves, beaded borders, rosettes, fluting and delicate foliate motifs continuing across the drawers, apron and tall legs. The abundance of carving is remarkable, carrying the Louis XVI vocabulary throughout the cabinet and giving every view something beautiful to discover.
The cylinder rolls upward to reveal a generous open compartment, creating convenient concealed storage. A beautifully carved drawer below provides additional storage, while the smaller upper drawer and shallow shelf add another useful level to the design. This thoughtful combination of compartments makes the cabinet particularly appealing as an antique nightstand, beside a favorite chair, or between a pair of chairs.
Richly carved, beautifully aged and wonderfully functional, this lovely cabinet embodies the refinement and decorative artistry that make 19th century French Louis XVI furniture so desirable.
