19th Century French Louis XVI Walnut Side Table is a study in the neoclassical revival of the late 1800s, and one of the French styles reborn during this period was called Henri II, very similar to the Louis XVI style with which most are familiar.  Rectilinear forms dominate the architecture, with a multi-tiered molding surrounding the rectangular top which features mitered corners so no sharp edges are presented into the traffic pattern of the room.  Underneath the mitered corners rosettes have been carved, which is a typically French affectation.  The apron between the rosettes is carved with a handsome heraldic crest flanked by scepters and foliates, and is itself centered with a rosette, on each of four sides!  Support is provided by four tapered, fluted and carved columns that are in turn connected with double lyre stretchers centered with a prominent urn finial.  What a splendid example of the classic architecture of the ancient Greeks and Romans!
