19th Century Gothic Revival Octagonal End Table is an amazing expression of the style that is considered the oldest of the formal French styles in history.  Dating back to the middle of the 12th century, the style revolutionized the world of architecture and design.  Many of the elements drew inspiration from symbolism related to religion, primarily Christianity.  This particular example features cared inscriptions in a calligraphy style that we were unable to fully translate, but seemed to have a faith-based theme.  Underneath the carved top is a fully carved eight-faceted apron which in turn is supported by elegantly curved scrolls, a central shaft, and four diagonal legs, all of which have received the attentions of a skilled wood sculptor.  Rendered from solid old growth oak to last for centuries!
Circa 1870s
