19th Century Italian Neoclassical Painted Marble Top End Table is an impressive work of the cabinetmaker's art on a diminutive scale.  Four legs consisting of tapered and reeded upper sections with contrasting highlights in gold against the patinaed cream color of the main paint scheme create an illusion of fluting, with the legs all joining to plinth blocks into which a classic "H" stretcher is joined on the inside, and turned legs on the bottoms.  The same highlighting theme that appears on the legs is continued on the structure for a superb visual effect.  All of this combines to support the shallow casework above which contains a single drawer enhanced by banner-style castellations suspended around all three sides of the apron.  The side panels and the drawer are framed in molding highlighted with the same gold, accented with whimsical wildflowers.  Cast brass ornaments and a pendant pull with more hand-painted accents define the drawer itself.  Above, a single slab of black marble provides an elegant yet carefree surface.  The aging and patina are marvelous, but do not detract from the fine craftsmanship that ensure this piece will remain a family favorite for decades to come!
