A Dutch writing table in the 18th century style, stripped to a soft, sun bleached finish that lets the natural grain of the old growth sycamore glow beneath a gently washed patina. Two drawers with turned knobs sit above a scalloped apron, carried on robust baluster turned legs ringed with fine incised lines. Below, a serpentine 'X' stretcher with molded edges sweeps between the legs and rises at the center to an urn finial, all resting on sturdy bun feet.
The design celebrates the Dutch Baroque tradition that gave rise to the William and Mary style, admired for its sculptural turnings and sweeping stretchers. Mid 20th century Dutch cabinetmakers revived these forms with true respect for the originals, building a framed top with a molded edge and a solid, well balanced base. Stripping the old finish revealed the beauty of that craftsmanship, and the layered, softly worn surface now carries the charm of a piece loved for generations.
Wonderfully versatile, the table serves beautifully in a study or bedroom, as a console in an entry hall or behind a sofa, or as an end table beside a favorite reading chair. Its pale, airy finish brings warmth to farmhouse, coastal, and modern European interiors alike.
Circa mid 1900s.
Measures 31H x 47W x 28D; minimum knee clearance 22H at lowest point of apron undulation.
