A French Louis XVI mahogany end table with a round Carrara marble top, framed by a pierced brass gallery that catches the light along its edge. The figured mahogany is finished to a deep, warm glow, which sets off the soft gray veining of the marble. Fluted corner blocks crown four slender tapering legs. Each leg is carved with long flutes, has a turned collar at the top and ends in a brass toe cap. A shaped shelf with incurved sides joins the legs below and gives a second surface for books or a small collection.
Louis XVI design is one of the most lasting expressions of French neoclassicism. It is prized for clarity of line, balanced proportion and ornament drawn from classical architecture. The fluted leg, modeled on the ancient column, and the pierced brass gallery are hallmarks of the style. French cabinetmakers kept reviving and reinterpreting them well into the 20th century, celebrating the refined legacy of French furniture making.
The table is compact enough to stand beside a sofa or armchair, next to a bed, or in an entry with a lamp and a vase of flowers. Its mahogany and brass bring warmth to a light contemporary room, and the Carrara marble keeps the look fresh and tailored.
