SaleA 19th century French Renaissance Revival buffet hand carved from rich walnut, glowing with a deep, warm patina that only generations of care can create. Lions' heads stand guard at each corner and at the center of the frieze, ancient emblems of strength, courage and protection. Between them, bold gadrooning wraps around three sides, framing a pair of drawers fitted with cast bronze bale pulls. The paired doors are carved in deep relief with acanthus scrollwork rising to an urn overflowing with fruit, the classical symbol of abundance and hospitality, a fitting theme for the dining room. Cast bronze escutcheons, beaded base molding and sturdy bun feet complete the composition, with paneled sides and solid frame and panel construction throughout.
Renaissance Revival furniture reached the height of its popularity in the second half of the 19th century, flourishing during the Napoleon III era as French workshops celebrated the refined legacy of French furniture making by reviving and reinterpreting its great historic styles. Prized for architectural strength and masterful carving, the style allowed skilled carvers to bring lions, gadroons and scrolling foliage to life with a confidence and depth that remain impressive today.
In the dining room, the buffet offers a handsome surface for serving and display. Its compact scale also suits an entry, library or living room, crowned by a gilt mirror, a large oil painting or a pair of tall candlesticks. Against light walls and contemporary art, the dark walnut and sculptural carving bring warmth, history and quiet grandeur to the space.
