SaleCommanding in scale and graceful in movement, this Country French buffet draws upon the provincial cabinetmaking traditions that carried the elegance of French design into the finest regional workshops. Crafted in walnut, the architectural step front façade is softened by serpentine sides and rounded corner posts, giving the broad case a sculptural rhythm from every angle. Four drawers are positioned above four paneled doors, each defined by shaped moldings and carved flourishes rooted in the decorative vocabulary of the French countryside. The undulating apron is centered with acanthus fronds and wildflower sprays, motifs long associated with abundance, nature, and the artistry of rural France. Six boldly scrolled legs terminating in escargot feet lend the piece a poised and elegant stance, while brass hinges, figured key guards, and cast drawer pulls complete the composition with finely judged detail. Expertly whitewashed by our in house staff, the walnut displays a softly luminous surface that reveals the character of the grain and gives clarity to the carved ornament and molded casework. Crowning the buffet is an exceptional rouge and sienna marble top measuring approximately three centimeters in thickness, possibly more. The richly veined stone has been carefully shaped and hand beveled to follow the stepped façade and serpentine contours below, forming an architectural union of walnut and marble that gives the piece its rare distinction and enduring beauty.
Circa early 1900s.
