19th Century French Empire Mahogany Commode is a splendid example of Napoleon III Period craftsmanship!  Reviving the style that originated during his uncle's reign, one of many that were revived during the era, the craftsmen obtained fine mahogany from the Americas and added signature brass embellishments with key guards and ring pulls with their own guards.  The rectilinear architecture is prominent in the design, a sign of classical influence.  Plinth blocks above and below form the cornerposts, in between which appear half-round columns adorned with half-ring capitals and bases in embossed brass.  Interestingly the top and bottom drawers open normally, but the middle two drawers are hinged along the bottom and drop open.  Why this configuration was chosen remains a mystery.  Note the hand-chamfered solid pine plank backing.  The entire piece is barely 16" deep making it deal for high-traffic areas or low footprint requirements.
