Exceptional French Louis Philippe period commode secretary crafted in richly figured burl walnut and crowned with its original gray marble top. The beautifully molded double edge of the marble follows the architectural lines of the commode, complementing the warm walnut and distinctive rounded moldings associated with the Louis Philippe period.
The upper drawer front folds forward to create a generous writing surface, revealing a fitted secretary interior with multiple small pullout drawers and an open central compartment. Below, two spacious drawers provide excellent storage, joined by a cleverly concealed drawer incorporated into the lower plinth.
Remarkable burl walnut veneers were carefully selected and arranged across the façade, giving the commode depth, movement and a beautifully preserved antique patina. The rounded lower drawer, restrained ornamentation and strong architectural form are characteristic of French furniture produced during the reign of Louis Philippe from 1830 to 1848.
Offering the storage of a commode together with a complete writing desk, this antique French secretary is an increasingly difficult form to find. Its refined appearance and practical design make it equally suited for a bedroom, library, office or salon.
