19th Century French Louis Philippe Walnut Marble Top Commode is a fine example of late period craftsmanship, when additional ornamentation was beginning to be introduced.  The ornamentation takes the form of finely detailed brass castings forming the drawers' bale pulls and key guards.  Even the top serpentine shaped molding detail, a classic Louis Philippe style element, is a drawer, appearing just underneath the luxuriously veined dark gray "sandwich" marble top ~ so called because of the grooves appearing on the edge all around, instead of beveling.  The rich, full grain of the sumptuous French walnut is on full display from the marble to the pediment feet below, adding even more restrained elegance.
