19th Century French Transitional Louis XV-Louis XVI Marble Top Mahogany Commode embodies the refinement of two of France’s most enduring decorative styles. Crafted in richly figured mahogany and topped with its original marble, the piece combines the graceful movement of the Louis XV tradition with the tailored neoclassical restraint that came to define the Louis XVI period.
The case is distinguished by an engaging contour, with softly rounded front corners, fluted corner posts, and a subtly projected center section carried from the shaped marble top down through the apron. Mounted at the apron is an elegant gilt bronze ornament centered with a classical urn and foliage motif, a detail that reinforces the commode’s sophisticated balance of ornament and order. Three generous drawers provide ample storage, each fitted with original bronze ring pulls and ribbon-tied shield-form key guards. Bronze sabots complete the feet, while the warm mahogany veneer lends depth and richness across the façade and sides.
Elegant, versatile, and full of French character, this commode makes a wonderful choice for a bedroom, living room, foyer, or dining space.
