SaleItalian furniture of the 19th century often possesses a special elegance, combining graceful form with a deep appreciation for beautiful woods and finely judged ornament. This handsome walnut commode reflects that tradition with a restrained sophistication that allows the materials and craftsmanship to take center stage.
The richly toned walnut has been arranged in subtly changing patterns across the front and sides, creating movement within the grain and lending the surface a gentle decorative quality. Fine inlay adds another layer of refinement, while the softly bowed façade gives the commode a graceful silhouette and a pleasing sense of depth.
Two broad drawers provide generous storage and are accented with finely cast bronze pulls and key guards in the Rococo manner. Their scrolling foliage and delicate movement bring a note of richness to the dark walnut, beautifully complementing the quiet artistry of the veneers.
The case is raised upon boldly scrolled legs carved with acanthus details at the shoulders, giving the piece both elegance and lift. A gently shaped apron follows the curve of the façade, completing the composition with a fluid line that is unmistakably Italian.
The walnut has acquired a deep, warm patina and beautiful character over many generations, enhancing the subtle grain and giving the commode the gracious presence that only an authentic antique can possess. Refined yet unpretentious, it is a lovely expression of Italian cabinetmaking from the latter part of the 19th century.
