Inspired by the great tradition of eighteenth century French cabinetmaking, this elegant commode brings together finely figured veneers, intricate marquetry, ormolu mounts and richly veined Rouge marble. Its graceful form reflects the transition from the fluid lines of Louis XV furniture to the symmetry and neoclassical refinement of the Louis XVI style.
The shaped façade is beautifully arranged with burl wood panels, geometric inlay and a central marquetry composition depicting flowers, foliage and a bird. Created from carefully selected contrasting woods, the design gives the front of the commode the character of a decorative work of art. Ormolu ring pulls, corner mounts, an ornate escutcheon, a floral apron mount and bronze sabots complete the composition with the fine detailing associated with French furniture.
The Rouge marble top follows the contours of the case and adds depth of color to the warm tones of the veneers and bronze. Its elegant scale makes the commode especially versatile for an entry, bedroom, living room or beneath a mirror or painting, while the drawers provide practical storage.
A beautifully executed antique French commode, rich in decorative detail and rooted in the enduring tradition of French design.
