Location: Baton Rouge
SaleA pair of antique Italian glazed terracotta plaques, each modeled with a reclining cherub amid ribbons, foliage and fruit, rendered in lustrous ivory glaze against a hand brushed cornflower blue ground. One cherub lifts a ribbon tied garland heavy with grapes and fruit, and its companion cradles a cornucopia overflowing with the harvest, together celebrating the bounty of the earth.
The luminous blue and white palette and sculptural high relief carry on the celebrated tradition of the Della Robbia workshop in Renaissance Florence, cherished and revived by Italian ceramicists into the early 20th century. Each plaque was formed by pressing terracotta into a mold, leaving a hollowed back that follows the contours of the relief, then glazed and fired. A fine crazing across the surface lends the soft patina of age. Cherubs bearing fruit and garlands have long symbolized joy, abundance and the blessings of the seasons.
Shown here displayed on stands, they make charming accents for a mantel, bookcase or console. Hung above a fireplace or range, or on a kitchen wall, they bring classical grace, color and texture to traditional and contemporary interiors alike.
Circa early 1900s
Each measures 12H x 17.5W
