Created for an Italian church during the Baroque period, this exceptional pair of 18th century antique candlesticks reflects the expressive carving, theatrical movement, and devotional purpose that distinguished Italian ecclesiastical art of the era. Each candlestick was hand carved from wood and composed as a sculptural succession of boldly modeled forms, rising from richly carved tripod bases through swelling baluster sections, scrolling ornament, and deeply worked foliate detail.
The surfaces retain beautiful remnants of their original silver leaf finish, now softened and worn through centuries of age and use. Areas of exposed wood, traces of silver leaf, and the naturally developed patina create remarkable depth and variation across the carving. This timeworn surface is an essential part of their character, preserving the authenticity of objects that once stood within a sacred interior illuminated by candlelight.
Each candlestick is fitted with a hand forged iron spike above a scalloped candle cup, a practical and original element designed to secure substantial church candles.
