19th Century French Louis XVI Walnut Nightstand ~ Jewelry Cabinet would be considered indispensable to a lady of refinement during the period, as it served as a small repository of her seasonal jewelry collection immediately at hand in the dressing room or bedroom, housed in an attractive, finely crafted furnishing that bespeaks of sheer quality although in a diminutive size.  The top is beveled and features the very subtle bow front that is carried out into the casework below, but unlike most pieces of this appearance, the top opens up trunk-like to reveal the upper jewelry drawer and sports a beveled mirror built into the inside top, perfect for making sure one's jewelry is properly in place.  More jewelry can be stored in the full width drawer below.  Both the frontispiece of the top-accessed drawer and the lower full-width drawer are carved with a crest and olive branches in relief, framed by finely formed raised panels.  The lower drawer is also fitted with solid hand-cast bronze ring pulls in the shape of garlands, with an acanthus flourish on the apron centered underneath.  Bundles of banded wheat are depicted in the carved cornerposts that also serve as frameworks for the front facade.  Support is provided by four elegantly tapered and fluted legs which are connected at their plinths below with a full width beveled edge shelf, under which elongated urn-shaped legs finish the look.  Excellent as a bedside companion, as well!
