Set of Four 19th Century Russian Devotional Icons Hand Painted on Wooden Panels with luminous gold grounds, rich sacred color, and a deeply moving spiritual presence.  Coming from a private collection where they remained together for over a century, this set carries not only artistic and historical importance, but also the quiet reverence of objects treasured through generations.
Russian icons were created as sacred images for prayer, contemplation, and protection.  In Orthodox tradition, they served as a spiritual presence within the home, chapel, or church, connecting daily life with faith, devotion, and divine intercession.  Their beauty was never meant to be merely decorative.  Each icon was painted with intention, symbolism, and reverence, following centuries of religious and artistic tradition.
This beautiful group includes important Orthodox subjects, including the Pokrov, or Protection of the Mother of God, along with other sacred scenes and figures.  The gold grounds suggest heavenly light, while the red borders, haloed figures, architectural settings, and richly patterned garments give each panel its solemn beauty and devotional power.
The surfaces show the character expected from 19th century icons, with softened gilding, craquelure, gentle wear, and age that speak to their long life of reverence.  Their presence is exceptionally heartfelt, with the quiet dignity of sacred works that have been cherished and preserved within a private collection for more than one hundred years.
Together, these four icons form a rare and meaningful devotional collection.  Displayed as a group, they create a powerful spiritual and visual statement, honoring faith, history, and the enduring craftsmanship of Russian icon painting.
1. The Pokrov, or Protection of the Mother of God
A deeply beloved Orthodox subject depicting the Virgin Mary as protector and intercessor.  The Mother of God is shown with Christ Child, attended by angels, expressing divine shelter, mercy, and spiritual protection over the faithful.  In Russian devotion, the Pokrov has long carried profound meaning as an image of comfort, guardianship, and heavenly compassion.
2. The Holy Trinity, also known as the Hospitality of Abraham
The icon with three haloed angels seated at a table represents the Old Testament Trinity, or Hospitality of Abraham.  This subject refers to the three angelic visitors who appeared to Abraham and Sarah and became one of the most important symbolic images of the Holy Trinity in Orthodox tradition.  It represents divine presence, sacred hospitality, unity, blessing, and the mystery of God revealed through holy visitation.
3. The Hospitality of Abraham with Abraham and Sarah
The larger horizontal panel appears to show a fuller narrative version of the biblical visitation, with Abraham and Sarah present alongside the angelic guests.  This composition emphasizes the sacred story of receiving the heavenly visitors and the blessing promised to Abraham’s household. Its meaning centers on faith, generosity, divine promise, and the spiritual importance of welcoming the sacred into the home.
4. Saints Peter and Paul Holding the Church
The icon with two standing saints holding a small church or shrine appears to depict Saints Peter and Paul, two foundational apostles of Christianity.  Saint Peter and Saint Paul are often shown together as spiritual pillars of the Church, representing apostolic authority, sacrifice, teaching, and continuity of faith.  The church held between them symbolizes the Christian Church entrusted to their witness and preserved through sacred tradition.
