A 19th century French Renaissance Revival buffet carved in oak, celebrating the bounty of the French countryside in deep sculptural relief. The doors carry a pair of harvest trophies suspended from bows of ribbon. On the left, clusters of grapes and fruit spill from a harvest basket, and on the right, a sheaf of wheat is gathered beneath a straw hat with the tools of the field. Together they speak of bread and wine, the twin gifts of the harvest, carrying both the joy of the French table and deep spiritual meaning.
Above, a pair of drawers is carved with scrolling foliage centered by lion masks that serve as the pulls, set between carved rosettes. Fluted and turned columns frame the facade, while the carved edge of the top and the stepped plinth base lend architectural presence. Built of solid oak with traditional frame and panel construction, the case has mellowed to a rich, darker patina that brings every detail of the carving forward.
Renaissance Revival flourished in France during the Napoleon III era, part of the great 19th century revival of all French styles that made the period a glorious chapter of French furniture making. Its compact scale suits a dining room, entry, or living room, where it serves beautifully as a sideboard, bar, or console beneath art or a mirror, bringing warmth and Old World character to traditional and transitional interiors alike.
