SaleOriginally created for a Normandy château, this remarkable 19th century French buffet is a richly sculpted statement in the Renaissance Revival style, with all the presence, artistry, and decorative power that make Henri II furniture so compelling today. Its rounded sides are not only visually striking, but also speak to the caliber of the piece. Favored in fine Renaissance Revival furniture for the better flow they brought to a room, such contours required exceptional craftsmanship, as the oak had to be carved on a radius with great precision, demanding both skill and expense to achieve.
The original marble top, beautifully veined and shaped to follow the contours of the case, adds another layer of distinction while providing an elegant surface for serving, display, or entertaining. Below, the façade is animated by bold lion’s heads, heraldic motifs, foliate relief, and carved pilasters, all executed in richly patinated oak with impressive depth and movement. Every surface reflects the kind of workmanship and design confidence reserved for better furniture of the period, while the generous drawers and cabinets provide abundant storage behind all that beauty.
This is the kind of buffet that anchors a room instantly, bringing sculptural presence, historic richness, and a level of craftsmanship that is increasingly hard to find.
The matching bookcase from the same château suite is also available at the time of this writing, offering a rare opportunity to acquire its original companion. Together, they make an especially striking complement. Please see the related items link below.
