A French Louis XIV buffet hand carved from quarter-sawn white oak, its honeyed patina revealing the shimmering ray fleck figure so admired in the finest old growth oak. Inspired by the grandeur of the Italian Renaissance, the design is anchored by magnificent lion's paw feet, carved nearly life size as timeless symbols of majesty and strength. Scallop shells, a beloved emblem of the Louis XIV style, crown the corner consoles beneath a crisp dentil molded top. The doors and sides are framed in the manner of heraldic crests, with scrolling strap work carved in deep relief and remarkable artistry. A long drawer with turned knobs and paneled frame and panel construction throughout complete the composition.
Renaissance Revival furniture remained a favorite of French cabinetmakers into the early 20th century, carrying forward the 19th century tradition of reviving and reinterpreting the great historic styles of France. Created for a stately country manor, the buffet unites Louis XIV elegance with the bold sculptural spirit of the Renaissance, a celebration of the carver's art.
In the dining room, the buffet serves beautifully for entertaining and display. Its graceful scale also suits an entry, library or family room, topped with a carved mirror, a still life painting or a pair of iron candlesticks. The warm tone of the oak and the lion's paw feet bring old world character and a sense of history to traditional and contemporary interiors alike.
