SaleGrand French Normandy Gothic Revival White Oak Buffet was crafted on a remarkable scale from massive timbers and thick planks of solid white oak. The expansive form reflects the enduring strength and distinctive character of traditional furniture from the Normandy region of France.
Four linenfold carved doors create a strong Gothic rhythm across the façade, complemented by a richly carved central cabinet door depicting a medieval scene. A bold dentil border beneath the substantial top adds depth and architectural definition, while the shaped lower aprons provide a restrained finishing touch.
The extraordinary hardware is among the buffet’s most compelling features. Hand forged strap hinges, fleur de lis hinges, ring pulls, shield shaped key guards and interior latch mechanisms contrast beautifully against the pale oak. Each element contributes to the authentic Gothic Revival appearance and gives the piece tremendous visual presence.
Painstakingly stripped and lightly whitewashed, the finish allows the grain, texture and natural beauty of the white oak to remain visible while giving the buffet a softer and lighter appearance.
Circa mid 1900s
