A striking Dutch buffet crafted from thick, heavy quarter-sawn oak, combining the strength and permanence of traditional Gothic furniture with a cleaner 20th-century interpretation. The stripped finish beautifully reveals the pronounced grain of the oak, giving the substantial case a lighter, more contemporary presence while preserving its strong European character.
Particularly noteworthy is the extensive Gothic-style ironwork, with long decorative strap hinges, an elaborate central locking mechanism and scrolling details that create a dramatic contrast against the pale oak. Carved panels on the outer doors and the rhythmic block detailing beneath the top add another layer of craftsmanship, while the gently shaped apron softens the otherwise rectilinear design. Two drawers above four cabinet doors provide generous storage across its unusually broad 97-inch scale.
Made during the mid-20th century, the buffet is a compelling reinterpretation of centuries-old Gothic design, retaining its medieval inspiration while simplifying the form for a more modern interior. An exceptional example of Dutch craftsmanship, impressive in both quality and scale.
